In Haunting Voices, Vivian Avraamidou Ploumbis returns to her hometown of Famagusta, Cyprus, and to the consequences of nationalism, war and displacement.

The collection brings together 73 short stories, originally published in Greek as Της Ντροπής and translated into English by Achilleas Antoniades.

The stories were inspired by photographs taken in Varosha after part of the sealed-off area was reopened to visitors. Images of abandoned homes, streets and everyday objects awakened memories of the author’s childhood and became the starting point for each story. The photographs accompany the stories through QR codes.

Through personal memory and fiction, Haunting Voices reflects on what was lost in Famagusta — and on the human cost of nationalism that continues long after war itself has ended.
